What is inverted nipple?

Inverted nipple is a condition where the nipple, instead of pointing outward, is retracted into the breast or flat.

For serious cases of inverted nipple, it may cause infection, pain, papilitis.
Also, breast feeding is impossible after giving birth, so correction is needed.

Surgical Method for Inverted nipple

  • Preserving the mammary duct Lengthen the nipple using the skin around nipple
    Characteristics
    Most preferred method and suitable for woman who plan on breast feeding but not suitable for serious inversion
    Method
    Lengthening the skin around the nipple to make breast feeding possible
  • NOT preserving the mammary duct Lengthen the nipple, then incise the tissue
    Characteristics
    Suitable for seriously inverted nipple and for revision inverted nipple surgery. Low chance of reoccurrence. But there may be some damage to the mammary duct so breast feeding may become difficult.
    Method
    Lengthening the skin around the nipple and desquamating the tissue.

What is Nipple Reduction?

If the nipple is abnormally large, and if its sagging downwards, nipple reduction is needed to correct the nipple size.

Surgical Method for Nipple Reduction

  • Preserving the mammary duct
    Characteristics
    Breast feeding is possible due to no damage to the mammary duct.
    Method
    Removing the upper or middle part of the nipple then closing up the area to shorten the size or length of the nipple
  • NOT preserving the mammary duct
    Characteristics
    This method can reduce the size of the nipple but can damage the mammary duct, so breast feeding may become difficult.
    Method
    Incising the top of the nipple into a V shape then closing it.
