Nasolabial Fold-Specialized Lifting A Direct Solution Tailored to the Cause Is Needed.
2025-05-08
Facial wrinkles naturally form as people age, but most individuals do not welcome them. From early signs of aging in the mid-20s and early 30s to middle age in the 40s and 50s, wrinkles are a source of concern for many people. Among them, nasolabial folds are a common aesthetic concern regardless of gender or age.
In fact, according to a survey conducted by a medical institution, nasolabial folds were identified as the biggest concern among women across all age groups from their 20s to 50s. In their 20s and 30s, facial sagging is not yet prominent, so nasolabial folds stand out more. In their 40s and 50s, overall facial sagging deepens the folds, making them even more noticeable.
Nasolabial folds are wrinkles that develop due to a lack of structural support within the skin. Elastic components of the skin—such as hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen—gradually decrease with age, leading to wrinkle formation.
There are several contributing factors. First, as the skin becomes thinner and loses internal support, it begins to sag, making nasolabial folds more prominent.
Another cause is the downward displacement of fat in the mid-cheek and cheek areas with age. As the supporting ligaments in the skin weaken and can no longer hold the fat in place, it shifts downward toward the nasolabial area, deepening the folds.
Additionally, decreased skin hydration can intensify expression lines. As moisture levels in the skin decline, its ability to maintain structure weakens, regeneration slows, and wrinkles become deeper.
There are various dermatological treatments and lifting procedures to improve nasolabial folds. Fillers and Botox can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but their effects are short-lived, typically lasting around six months.
For more lasting improvement, it is necessary to use nasolabial fold–specialized lifting treatments that directly target the cause of the wrinkles, improving both the surface and deeper layers of the skin to enhance elasticity.
Specialized nasolabial lifting can combine various procedures such as thread lifting, laser lifting, and skin boosters for optimal results.
Thread lifting includes different types such as Jamber threads, scaffold threads, and mono (collagen-stimulating) threads, which can be selected according to tissue characteristics.
Laser lifting uses energy-based devices such as ultrasound and radiofrequency to contract and regenerate deep skin tissues, improving elasticity and lifting the skin. Options include Ultherapy Prime, Thermage FLX, Soprano Titanium, and InMode lifting.
Skin booster treatments directly inject high-concentration nutrients into the skin to replenish moisture and nutrients, improving overall skin quality. Depending on individual needs, treatments such as UltraCol 200, Juvelook Volume, and Skinvive may be used.
Director Han Jong-sun of DA Plastic Surgery Clinic advises, “Although nasolabial folds share the same name, their causes and symptoms vary. Therefore, a personalized, cause-targeted lifting approach that addresses both the surface and deeper layers of the skin is necessary to achieve the desired improvement. Patients should consult experienced medical professionals and choose treatments tailored to their specific condition.”
