◆ Considerations for Breast Revision Surgery

If you are planning breast revision surgery, you should first determine whether there is implant rupture or inflammation through X-ray and ultrasound examinations, and then decide whether capsule removal is necessary.

Dr. Koo stated, “If removing the capsule alone is not sufficient, it is important to eliminate any existing inflammation and create a new layer to establish a healthy environment.”

▲ General Breast Revision Surgery

In general, breast revision surgery is considered appropriate about 6 months to 1 year after the initial surgery, once the tissues have stabilized.

Around this time, patients should receive consultation and undergo a precise diagnosis to identify the cause of the previous surgery failure and current breast issues, and then establish a revision plan.

Dr. Koo said, “Various factors must be considered in revision surgery. Size, shape, texture, lateral/bottom displacement, and capsular contracture should all be taken into account to prevent the same problems from recurring.”

In terms of “size,” implants may be increased or decreased, and they should be adjusted to an appropriate size that matches the patient’s body to maintain overall balance.

For “shape,” there are various issues such as double inframammary folds, imbalance in areola position, and unnatural or asymmetrical shapes, so a tailored surgical plan is required.

▲ Texture & Lateral/Bottom Displacement

Revision surgery for improving “texture” is performed in cases where the implant is palpable or ruptured, and it should aim to achieve a soft, natural feel like a real breast.
