Vertical Mini Facelift: Key Considerations for Improving Sagging Skin and Elasticity

2025-07-11

A youthful appearance is often defined by firm, smooth, and elastic skin, along with a slim and well-contoured facial shape. As a result, many people invest in skincare routines and anti-aging solutions to maintain a refreshed look. However, when signs of aging such as skin sagging and loss of elasticity have already progressed, topical treatments alone may not provide noticeable or fast results.

In such cases, aesthetic procedures and anti-aging surgery offered by dermatology and plastic surgery clinics can provide more effective and long-lasting improvements. Among these, surgical lifting techniques—designed to physically reposition and secure underlying tissues—offer both immediate results and longer-lasting effects compared to non-invasive treatments.

One procedure gaining attention is the vertical mini facelift, a refined approach within mini facelift surgery that delivers results similar to a traditional SMAS facelift, but with less invasiveness. This technique involves a minimal incision of approximately 1 cm along the hairline, making scars less visible and recovery more manageable.

A key factor in achieving optimal results is the direction of lifting. Unlike traditional methods that pull the skin sideways, vertical mini lifting elevates the tissues upward against gravity. Horizontal lifting may make the cheekbones appear wider and the face look broader, whereas vertical lifting helps create a naturally slimmer and more youthful facial contour.

The procedure targets multiple layers of the face—including the epidermis, dermis, SMAS layer, and retaining ligaments—providing a comprehensive lifting effect from deep within. This multi-layered approach enhances both the immediate lifting outcome and long-term durability, helping to prevent recurrent sagging.

For effective and lasting results, it is essential to properly release the retaining ligaments and perform vertical dissection to lift the SMAS layer. This allows the repositioned tissues to naturally adhere and stabilize over time, reducing the likelihood of future sagging and ensuring a more natural outcome.

Another advantage of the vertical mini facelift is its ability to provide targeted lifting by facial area. It effectively improves sagging cheeks, nasolabial folds, deep cheek fat, marionette lines, and a weakened jawline. In addition, repositioning subcutaneous fat during the procedure can restore facial volume, enhancing both elasticity and fullness for a more youthful appearance.

For enhanced results, the procedure can be combined with a brow lift, which focuses on the upper face. While vertical mini lifting addresses the midface and lower face, a brow lift improves the upper facial area. Together, they create a full-face lifting effect, maximizing anti-aging outcomes.

According to Dr. Hyun Goo Kang of DA Plastic Surgery Clinic,

“To maximize the results of a vertical mini facelift, it is essential to accurately assess the patient’s facial condition and develop a customized surgical plan, including incision design and lifting intensity. As the procedure typically takes around 30 minutes and can deliver noticeable improvement in a single session, patients are advised to undergo thorough consultation with an experienced surgeon before proceeding.”
